The Heart study explores the intersection between HIV and coronary artery disease (CAD)

  • Examine longitudinally how ART-induced subclinical and clinical coronary artery disease is exacerbated by chronic cocaine use in African Americans with HIV infection
  • Investigate how HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment is impacted by chronic cocaine use
  • Investigate epigenetic changes in relation to HIV-associated neurocognitive impairment and subclinical atherosclerosis

Current Research

  • To examine longitudinally the effects of HIV, chronic cocaine use, and prolonged ART exposure on the presence, development and progression of CCTA-defined subclinical/clinical CAD
  • To investigate whether cocaine use exacerbates the HIV-associated decline in cognitive function in HIV-infected cocaine users
  • To investigate whether HIV and cocaine use are associated with telomere shortening
  • To examine interrelationships between homocysteine (Hcy) and HIV/ART/cocaine-associated comorbidities
